+BOX is on a mission to bring balance to social and structural inequity with a core focus on empowering communities to reclaim their food sovereignty, by opening pathways to healthy, localized, sustainable foods.
The Board will support the work of Equation Collaborative and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Equation Collaborative’s Founder & Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:
- Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as he develops and implements Equation Collaborative’s strategic plan.
- Reviewing outcomes and metrics developed by Equation Collaborative for evaluating impact, and regularly measuring performance and effectiveness using those metrics.
- Approving Equation Collaborative’s annual budget and audit reports.
- Assisting the ED in identifying and recruiting other Board members.
- Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments.
- Representing Equation Collaborative to stakeholders, including funders, and acting as an ambassador for the organization.
- Ensuring Equation Collaborative’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities served by the organization.
- Providing subject matter expertise and consultation to the ED and staff, as appropriate and necessary.
Board Terms & Requirements:
- Board terms are 1 year
- Directors commit to either donate a minimum of $5,000 per year, raise the equivalent amount from others, or a combination thereof.
- Meetings are held quarterly at the +BOX office in Carlsbad or other convenient North County location.
- Occasional ad-hoc meetings are held to discuss or address some specific issue or need (in-person & virtual)
Qualifications:
Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, public education, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector. Their accomplishments will allow them to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members. Ideal candidates will have one or more of the following qualifications:
- Extensive professional experience with significant executive leadership in business, government, public K-12 education, philanthropy, or the nonprofit sector.
- Experience starting, developing, and/or leading high performing early stage organizations in business or the nonprofit sector.
- A commitment to and understanding of Equation Collaborative’s beneficiaries, preferably based on experience working with and/or in the communities served by the organization.
- An interest and ability to cultivate, facilitate, and build relationships with a diverse group of individuals and mission-aligned organizations to support fundraising and programming goals.
- Subject matter expertise and/or extensive experience and professional networks, preferably in the San Diego area, in:
- Fundraising, grant-making, or other development endeavors
- Understand financial statements, approve and monitor finances, authorize and approve budget and assist in developing realistic, achievable and measurable financial goals.
- Public K-12 administration, student support services, and/or nutrition services
- Nonprofit management
- Advocacy, public policy or community activism related to issues of public health, nutrition, food sovereignty, hunger relief, and/or sustainable/community agriculture.
