Home Start's mission is to assure the safety and resiliency of children by strengthening families and their communities.

The Board will support the work of Home Start, Inc. and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Home Start, Inc. Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Board-CEO relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

-Leadership, governance and oversight
-Serving as a trusted advisor to the CEO as s/he develops and implements Home Start, Inc. strategic plan
-Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by Home Start, Inc. for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
-Approving Home Start, Inc. annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
-Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the CEO
-Assisting the CEO and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
-Partnering with the CEO and other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out
Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments
-Representing Home Start, Inc. to stakeholders; acting as an ambassador for the organization
Ensuring Home Start, Inc. commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities Home Start, Inc. serves

Fundraising
Home Start, Inc. Board Members will consider Home Start, Inc. a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that Home Start, Inc. can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Home Start, Inc. expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Support the Executive Officer and review her/his performance

Nowhere else can the Chief Executive Officer seek the kind of moral and substantive support she/he needs consistently except from her/his board.

·       Receives frequent and constructive feedback

·       Is introduced to other community leaders and organizations

·       Is complimented for exceptional initiatives

·       Feels her/his performance is being assessed in relation to the board performance

·       Performance reviews are based on mutually discussed and agreed upon annual goals and objectives

Board terms/participation
Home Start, Inc. Board Members will serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for two additional terms. Home Start, Inc. holds 9 monthly Board meetings annually, one annual Board retreat and two Board socials. Committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.

Qualifications

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Home Start, Inc. mission and who has a track record of leadership. Selected Board Members will have achieved leadership stature in business, government, philanthropy, or other relevant sectors. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

Extensive professional or personal experience with significant leadership accomplishments
A commitment to and understanding of Home Start, Inc. beneficiaries, preferably based on experience
Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of Home Start, Inc. beneficiaries
Service on Home Start, Inc. Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.

_____  Meeting Attendance and Participation: I understand that the Board meets monthly* to conduct its regular business and that in addition to monthly meetings; the Board will schedule an annual Board Forward which is mandatory.  I herein commit to attending no less than 70% of all board meetings AND the annual board forward.

_____  Gala:  I will personally attend as well as ensure filling of a table of 10 at the annual Gala [personally, corporate or guest recruitment].   I will also donate a minimum of 3 bottles of wine [1 >$15, 1 >$20, 1 >$30].

 

_____  Hallo-Wine:  I will personally attend as well as ensure purchase of a minimum of 6 tickets to the annual Fall Festival event [personally, corporate or guest recruitment].  I will also donate a minimum of 3 bottles of wine [1 >$15, 1 >$20, 1 >$30].

In addition to the seven commitments, I am making the above, I will also make a minimum personal monetary gift, which can be given at any time throughout the fiscal year, of no less than $250.  I can make my contribution in the following ways:  lump sum gift, quarterly contributions, monthly contributions, or Gala/Special Event Support.
