Villa Musica makes music accessible through education, performance, and community engagement.
BOARD CULTURE STATEMENT: Our Board is a team of engaged, vision-driven community members committed to fulfilling Villa Musica’s mission with integrity, passion and transparency. Our actions are inspired by an authentic, impactful and supportive culture of accountability.
TERM: Two years. May be elected up to three consecutive two-year terms.
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Board of Directors
I. ROLE OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
Philanthropic Leadership
• Become knowledgeable about the philanthropic community and the techniques of fund raising.
• Support special events through commitment of ticket purchases and solicitation of corporate underwriting.
• Assist in resource development through research and identification of potential donors or funding sources
• Provide financial support to the mission as individually deemed appropriate
• Consider making a gift for the future (Planned Gift/Bequest)
Guidance and Planning
• Define and interpret the mission
• Review, approve, and monitor agency policies
• Participate in short and long range planning to achieve goals
• Provide support and guidance to the Executive Director
Finance
• Approve the annual budget and oversee financial performance as compared with the budget
• Develop realistic, achievable and measurable financial goals
• Ensure that all agency resources are allocated according to donor intent and in the best interest of those served by Villa Musica
• Advocacy and Outreach
• Understand, articulate and advocate the work of Villa Musica to the community
• Cultivate and enlist key community leaders for the benefit of Villa Musica
• Identify and recruit volunteer leadership for the board, standing committees and other ad-hoc committees
II. RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Attend board meetings.
• Attend annual board retreat
• Attend Villa Musica’s fundraising events
• Participate actively as a member of at least one committee
• Represent Villa Musica in the community
III. QUALIFICATIONS:
• A demonstrated interest in and commitment to Villa Musica’s mission, goals and objectives
• Specific experience, interest and/or knowledge in at least one area of Villa Musica’s operations.
• Previous experience in the following areas preferred (not required):
• Serving on a board for a non-profit
• Fundraising
• Volunteering
Knowledge, skills, and abilities in one or more of the following areas:
Event planning, general management, non-profit management, human resources, strategic planning, financial management, graphic design, legal, web design, fundraising, music education, music making, public relations, information technology
IV. TIME REQUIREMENTS OF BOARD MEMBERSHIP:
- Board meetings 6 meetings per year + 1 full-day retreat
- Committee meetings Estimated 1-2 hours per month/meeting
- Fundraising activities Estimated 1 hour per month
- Other misc. activities Estimated 1 hour per month
- Special events As needed
- Leadership positions Minimum 2 hours per month; Board Chair, Vice-Chair, Officers, Committee Chair, Special Events Chair
